November 2018

About Us

Welcome back to the Pulse Tone!  This is the fifth installment of the New Professional’s e-newsletter.  You can find previous installments here. We know you are busy and receive many emails so we promise to keep this short but informative.

Wait a second—who is “we”?

“We” is the New Professionals Committee. We’ve been around for a few years now, and are tasked with identifying and promoting the needs of new professionals (NPs) within the Academy. Communication is a two-way street, and we want to improve our connections with all of our fellow NPs.

Wondering how to get involved with the Academy? Sign-in to the Audiology Community, and under the “Volunteer” tab, “current volunteer opportunities” ” for a listing of all open opportunities. If you do not see one you are interested in, apply for the Volunteer Reserve to be considered for future volunteer opportunities.

Need to Know

It has been three months since our last issue and a lot has happened since then…

  • Stay informed on the latest studies for your patients! A recent study is making national headlines about hearing loss, hearing aids, and cognitive decline. The study by the Health and Retirement Study is showing hearing aid use slows decline in an episodic memory recall test by a significant amount.  Make sure to check out the study.  Also, review what consumers are reading from this NPR station article.
  • The 10th Anniversary of the Jerger Future Leaders in Audiology Conference (JFLAC) met this September in Reston, Virginia. This year’s JFLAC group consisted of 12 early to mid-career audiologists selected from a pool of applicants. During the conference, the audiologists learned about the history of the Academy, engaged in advocacy events, developed a leadership project, and discussed the future of the field.  JFLAC’s goal is to empower participants, develop their leadership skills, and help them advance the profession of audiology. For more information on JFLAC and how to apply, please visit the Academy website.  Updated information about the 2020 JFLAC will be posted closer to the next event.

Have You Heard?

Registration and hotel blocks for AAA 2019 opened earlier this week. View the preliminary schedule now and starting planning.

October was National Audiology Awareness Month. The Academy created several new resources to help promote public awareness, including a new awareness video!
