As of March 13, state legislatures in West Virginia, Utah, and Wyoming have passed legislation to implement the ASLP-IC, a state licensure compact for audiology and speech-language pathology.
West Virginia H.B. 4375, Utah H.B. 161, and Wyoming SF 87 passed their respective House and Senate chambers and each respective governor is expected to sign. The compact will become operational when 10 states enact the legislation for the compact.
Audiologists licensed in their home state would apply for a privilege to practice under the compact and it would allow licensed audiologists to practice face-to-face or through telehealth across state lines without having to become licensed in other ASLP-IC states. Similar licensure compacts already exist for nursing psychology and physical therapy.
The Academy was an active participant in the development of the model legislative language of the compact and has worked with other stakeholders to advance this legislation in the above-mentioned states as well as a number of others that are still pending. The Academy also sponsored a series of free member webinars in the fall of 2019 to educate members as well as state licensing board members.
